About Looking down on Addis

While Addis Ababa is at a high altitude, situated at an altitude of nearly 2,400m, it’s actually in a bowl surrounded by mountains of even higher altitudes. Many of the surrounding mountains are over 3,000m, and several of the viewpoints on the peaks are well worth a visit. What's more, many of them have interesting historical or religious sites on their peaks.

Entoto Mountain, to the north of Addis Ababa, is the highest of the peaks surrounding the city. Standing at over 3,200m, the mountain has lovely views of the city both from the top and from the eucalyptus-lined road that winds up to it. Emperor Menelik II established his capital on this peak in the 1890s; his palace is a surprisingly modest construction of a few simple rooms with wooden embellishments. Menelik II also founded the nearby church of Entoto Maryam, whose walls are decorated with lovely artwork; the adjoining museum has a collection of items of religious and historical significance from the Menelik era. It was Menelik’s wife, the Empress Taitu, who chose the actual site for the capital in the foothills of Entoto, and named it Addis Ababa. She also established the first hotel in the city, which is still in operation today and is named after her: Itegue Taitu Hotel, in the Piazza.

Washa Mikael Church is the closest rock-hewn church to Addis, which might have been built in the 4th century but was more probably built in the 12th century. While clearly in need of renovation, it remains an interesting site, and clambering around the ruins gives a good insight into parts of Ethiopian rock churches visitors can rarely access. Both the climb up to it and the viewpoints around it are lovely. For something a little different, why not ride a horse up this hill and be served a picnic on the top, looking down on Addis?
