About Dining in Addis

Addis Ababa has a number of dining options that are well worth trying. The traditional restaurants, many of which have cultural shows and Ethiopian dancing, offer the famed Ethiopian cuisine. There’s also a host of Italian restaurants that hark back to the time of the Italian occupation. More recently, a collection of restaurants from around the world has sprung up, making dining here much more cosmopolitan and exciting.

For an introduction to the culture and cuisine of Ethiopia, it’s impossible to beat spending an evening at one of the traditional restaurants. Habesha 2000, Yod Abyssinia, Addis Ababa and Dashen are perhaps the best known; all have a good variety of local dishes, traditional décor and lively atmosphere, and offer cultural shows by local musicians and dancers. There are, of course, plenty of other Ethiopian restaurants all over the capital serving delicious food without the singing and dancing. A food tour, stopping off at a number of handpicked restaurants and trying their signature dishes, gives a good overview of Ethiopia's famed cuisine.

Although the Italians were not here for long, they left their stamp on the restaurant scene in true Italian style. Italian restaurants, often overseen by rotund and passionate patrons, are found all over the city. Of note are Castelli, Gusto, Abucci, Grani di Pepe and Mamma Mia, although there are many others that deserve a visit.

A new and exciting addition to the food scene in Addis is restaurants serving food from specific countries around the world. Amongst these – but by no means all of them – are Café du Louvre for French food, Le Grand Reve for Belgian, Beer Garden Inn for German, Five Loaves for European light bites and brunch, Abucci for Mediterranean, Rainbow for Korean, Aladdin for Lebanese, Sakura for Japanese, Sichuan for Chinese, Fogo no Chao at Ramada for Brazilian, and the Greek Club for a range of Greek and other European dishes.

Coffee bars are an integral part of the scene here, and not to be missed. Tomoka and Alem Buna are two of the oldest and best known, but every street corner has a coffee bar, with traditional coffee ceremony, and the coffee served at every one is delicious.
