About Ethiopian Orthodox Churches

This unique, individual and insular branch of the Christian Church is widely respected all over the country, and has several awe-inspiring monuments in the city of Addis Ababa.

The Holy Trinity Cathedral, also known as Kidist Selassie and as Menbere Tsebaot, is the highest-ranking religious site in Addis. Large and high-roofed, the cathedral was the site of the ceremonial burial of Haile Selassie 25 years after his death, and is where he and his Empress Menen’s crypts remain. As well as an impressive list of emperors and patriarchs of the Ethiopian Orthadox Church, the British suffragette Sylvia Pankhurst is buried here, as are many fighters who resisted the Italian occupation and the Derg Regime.

St George’s Cathedral is a distinctive octagonal cathedral built on the site of a much older church. The church was founded by Emperor Menelik II, and named after the patron saint of soldiers when Ethiopia defeated the Italians in the Battle of Adwa, ending the first Italy Ethiopia war. Adding insult to injury, the victorious Ethiopians forced Italian prisoners of war to build the cathedral. In 1937, the Italian authorities burned the building, which was restored by Emperor Haile Selassie after Ethiopia’s liberation from Italian occupation in 1941.

Medane Alem Cathedral is the largest cathedral in Ethiopia and the second largest in Africa. With a name meaning Saviour of the World, this cathedral is a truly impressive structure with domes, columns, arches and stained glass windows.

Beata Maryam Church is an imposing stone church, with attractive domes and columns. Menelik II, his wife Empress Taitu and their daughter Zewditu, amongst other sovereigns, are bured here. Here also was Haile Selassie buried until his formal burial in the Holy Trinity Cathedral in 2000.

Addis is also home to numerous smaller and less well known churches that are centres of worship for the communities in and around the city, and which tourists are welcome to visit.
