Mt Choke, at 4,070m, is the third highest mountain in Ethiopia. High on the mountain’s slopes, Mulu Eco Lodge is a small and friendly lodge with stunning views.
There are 6 traditional houses sleeping up to 22 pax. Hoppi Gojo, meaning passion flower, has coloured glass bottles in its walls according to the Earthship Movement, lighting the rooms with multicoloured sunlight. The ground floor sleeps 3, the 1st floor sleeps 3, and a veranda surrounds the whole house. Kaga Gojo, meaning Rose Abyssinica, has a raised loft bed and more beds below. The houses are constructed entirely of local materials using ancient building techniques, and have rocket mass heaters and attractive bamboo furniture. All houses have adjacent bathroom huts with compost loo and open-air shower.
Meals are homemade Ethiopian vegetarian food; guests are welcome to teach the cooks their favourite dishes. Activities including multi-day treks, mountain biking, horse riding, forest walks, wildlife spotting, learning local handicrafts, Ethiopian cooking courses, traditional farming, visiting the Saturday market, and training at the nearby Olympic runners’ centre. The lodge operates according to eco-friendly principles and runs on solar power. It supports the local community by providing employment, sponsoring a local school, grinding mill and community house, and providing eco standards for local farmers.
