Addis Ababa has an interesting collection of museums, covering its history, politics, archaeological findings, and more. While none of them have modern interactive displays, their collections and exhibits are impressive if a little dusty.
The National Museum of Ethiopia has a collection of exhibitions mostly dedicated to ancient history. Lucy, the skeleton whose finding proved that hominids were walking 2.5 million years earlier than had previously been believed, has pride of place. Also of interest are the displays on the Emperors of Ethioia including Haile Selassie, the collection of artwork and handicrafts, and the ethnographic display about the peoples of this populous country. Just outside, the aptly named Lucy’s Restaurant has a tasty and diverse menu of dishes from Ethiopia and around the world.
The Ethnographic Museum is located inside the campus of the University of Addis Ababa. Outside it stands what has become an ironic tribute to fascism: a staircase built by the Italians, one step for every year of Mussolini’s rule, on which the mocking Ethiopians have placed a small Lion of Judah. Inside the museum is a remarkable collection of exhibits, including a cultural lifecycle, a section on Haile Selassie, a display on the Queen of Sheba and a presentation of religious and musical art.
The Red Terror Martyrs’ Memorial Museum, standing starkly over Meskel Square, is dedicated to the victims of the Derg Regime’s reign of terror. With photos, torture implements, bones and coffins, as well as interesting analytical essays on what happened and why, this is both painful and fascinating.
Other museums of interest include the Addis Ababa Museum, National Postal Museum, the National Archives and the Berhan Ethiopian Cultural Centre. Many of the churches around Addis have collections of religious icons and ancient documents.
The city also has a host of art galleries, possibly the most well known of which is Addis Fine Art. Other exciting galleries and artistic spaces include Gebre Kristos Desta Centre, St George, Asni, Makush and Fendika. Festivals to watch out for include the Addis Foto Fest, the Addis Video Art Festival and the Addis International Film Festival.
