There are a surprising number of sites within an easy drive of Addis of historical, geographical or visual interest that can be visited as day-trips while staying in the city. There are also a few nearby towns that are popular with residents of Addis for weekends away from the city.
Tiya Stelae is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of stone grave markers built more than 800 years ago, before Christianity reached the area. Their carvings are pictorial stories: the number of swords carved into one shows how many men he killed, a phallic stone demonstrates the man died before he reached the age of circumcision, shields symbolise warriors while breasts and jewellery symbolise women. Nearby Adadi Maryam, which can be visited on the same trip, is Ethiopia’s southernmost rock-hewn church, historically significant yet less ornate than similar churches in Lalibela.
The Portuguese Bridge, which might have been built by the Portuguese in the 16th century or, more probably, by Ras Darge, cousin of Emperor Menelik II, at the end of the 19th century, was constructed using traditional methods with limestone and crushed ostrich eggs. The gorge it spans is stunning, as is the waterfall beneath, and make a lovely place for a clamber over the rocks and a picnic. Gelada baboons are often seen here, and it’s a super spot for birding. Nearby Debre Libanos Church, which can be visited on the same trip – although not, according to the sign, if you’re menstruating or have had intercourse in the last few days – has wonderful stained glass and religious artwork. Women need to be dressed modestly to enter.
Bishoftu, also known as Debre Zeit, has several lovely crater lakes dotted with resorts and water sports centres. Emperor Haile Selassie frequented the spot, using it as a retreat from Addis, and this trend has been taken up by today’s Addis dwellers.
Adama, also known as Nasret, was a small railway station on the Djibouti line, and continues to be a useful stopping point for travellers heading south. It also has natural springs whose waters are believed to be therapeutic. Perhaps for this reason, there’s a clutch of attractive hotels and conference centres here, and the young and lively of Addis continue to spend weekends here.
