With attractive views of Lalibela, Tukul Village considers itself more of a village than a hotel. Conveniently located near the centre of town, the hotel is within walking distance of many of the ancient churches of Lalibela, including the famous Bete Giyorgis, otherwise known as the Church of St George.

The 24 en-suite rooms are in circular cottages with stone walls, thatched roofs, and local fabric curtains. The verandas have traditional tables and chairs from which visitors can look at the views. These modernised African huts are dotted around the sloping grounds. The restaurant serves Ethiopian cuisine, and has a selection of international dishes. There’s also a café and bar. The business centre has Internet, fax and printer. A small second-hand bookshop is also on site.

Lalibela is the jewel in the crown of Ethiopia, the site of the most famous churches and the scene of many major religious ceremonies. The churches have been active for 900 years, and there are over 600 priests and deacons. The churches, arguably Ethiopian’s top attraction, are carved below ground level and ringed by trenches and courtyards, and are connected to each other by a tangled maze of tunnels and passages.
