About Bale Mountain Lodge, Bale Mountain National Park

The rolling hills and craggy peaks of Bale Mountain National Park are filled with 87 mammal species including the rare Abyssinian Wolf and the Mountain Nyala. Bale Mountain is home to 320 species of birds including 170 migratory birds and 14 endemic species. Bale Mountain Lodge has breath-taking views of the park and its striking mountain ranges.

There are 11 en-suite cabins, comprising 10 doubles and a family chalet. All cabins are built of local stone, and have wood-burning stoves, handcrafted furniture and locally sourced fabrics. The family chalet has a kitchen bar, open-plan sitting room, and double and single upstairs, and can be taken on a self-catering basis when the lodge is closed.

The round tukul-style restaurant has glass sides to maximise the views, and is centred on a sunken fireplace and adorned with traditional Ethiopian artefacts. The restaurant serves Ethiopian cuisine and a selection of international dishes, and the bar offers international wines, spirits and beers. The lodge, which draws electricity from its own hydropower plant, is committed to ethical eco-principles, and works closely with the Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority to reduce the impact of activities within national parks. The lodge employs its staff from the local community, sponsors local children to attend elementary and high school, and supports the local clinic.

Activities include mountain climbing, game drives, game walks, horse riding, bird watching, trekking, honey collecting and fishing.
